This Revision Bite will give you practice in how to say dates in French.

Giving the date

In French, days of the week and months don't take a capital letter unless they start the sentence, for example:

  • mercredi 11 d├ęcembre
  • vendredi 21 mars

What's the date today?

You can answer the question Quelle est la date d'aujourd'hui? (What's the date today?) in three ways:

  • On est...
  • C'est...
  • Nous sommes + le + (day) + date + month (+ year)

For example:

  • On est le (dimanche) dix-huit mai (2008) (It's Sunday 18 May 2008)

On the first day of the month, you must use premier (1er), eg: C'est le premier mai (It's May 1st)

What day is it?

To answer the question Quel jour sommes-nous? (What day is it?) use one of the following phrases:

  • On est...
  • C'est...
  • Nous sommes... + day
  • On est samedi.
