Scenes for each character

To create scenes that show something important about each character, look at each one in turn, and think up the events in their lives that are significant in the story you are telling.

Some ideas:

Character scenes

Character 1 - Youth club managerCharacter 2 - Ghanaian doctorCharacter 3 - Teen tearaway

illustration of a woman

  • Wedding day of young couple - best man is giving a speech.
  • Her first child is born, and she is opening a card in hospital.
  • Letter (read out) from a youth club member thanking her for help at a time of trouble.

illustration of a man with glasses

  • The day in which the character receives his offer of a post as a junior doctor abroad.
  • Saying goodbye to the family at the airport.
  • Writing home about work and other aspects of life in UK. You could use a back-projection showing a view of British life, perhaps some news footage.

illustration of a boy wearing a baseball cap

  • In trouble at school for extorting money from younger students.
  • Newsflash about youths seen vandalising a churchyard.
  • Distraught girlfriend tells him she is pregnant. He says that she's on her own, he doesn't want this child.

Cross-cutting [cross-cutting: A technique used to show flash-backs, flash-forwards or to create the illusion of two or more actions occuring at the same time ] is a good technique because it can be used to:

  • highlight certain aspects of the plot, perhaps with contrasting scenes
  • add to the tension by delaying the action
  • keep the plot dynamic and interesting
  • enhance the pace of the plot and performance.
