Examination day

Here are some tips for the day of your exam:

  • Before you leave home check you have everything you need eg props, costume etc
  • Arrive at school in plenty of time.
  • Check with the rest of your group that you have everything in place.
  • If you think you are going to need a prompt make sure you choose someone reliable. Your teacher is probably the best person.
  • When the examiner arrives you should be sitting down calm and prepared. This will immediately create a good impression.
  • When it is your turn to perform stand on stage in a strong opening position and compose yourself.
  • Remember - this is live theatre and even professional actors make mistakes. What's important is how you handle them.
  • If you forget your line just wait calmly for your line - never shout "prompt!"
  • If your piece is well rehearsed you should be able to help each other out on stage.
  • If you have forgotten a prop, don't panic, just imagine it's there.
  • Don't giggle on stage unless of course it's part of the scene!
  • As a performer, you face is vitally important. Tie your hair back so you are not constantly playing with it!
  • Make sure your costume is comfortable and you don't need to tug and pull at it.
  • Remember - most examiners are teachers and they know exactly how nervous you are.
  • The key to this examination is thorough preparation. If you have followed your rehearsal timetable you should be exceptionally well prepared so enjoy the performance!

Revision Tip:

Although you will be relieved and excited after your practical examination, it’s worth preparing your written evaluation while the experience is still fresh in your mind. Look at unit 3 for tips on how to approach this.
