Types of questionnaire

The three main methods of conducting a questionnaire are:

  1. face to face
  2. by phone
  3. by post
  4. via a website

Face to face

Face to face questionnaires

People are more likely to answer questions. The interviewer can ask more complex questions. The interviewer can explain the questions if necessary. The interviewer is likely to be more consistent when they record the responses.Takes a long time to carry out survey. The interviewee is more likely to lie or to refuse to answer a question.
Phone

Phone questionnaires

People may feel more comfortable asking/answering personal questions because the interview isn't face to face.Phone calls can be expensive. Difficulty in obtaining people's phone numbers. Calling people at random can annoy them.
Post

Postal questionnaires

It's cheap because you don't have to pay an interviewer. People might have more time to answer the questions at home. It's anonymous, so the person answering the questions are less likely to lie or be embarrassed about their answer. People might not be bothered to return their questionnaires. There's no interviewer to explain questions that are not understood.
Website

Web based questionnaires

Cheap to set up. Saves time because you don't have to call or talk to people. Answers are anonymous, so people are more likely to answer honestly. There's no contact with the people you're questioning.
