Graphic media are the different techniques used in designing graphical products - for example pencil or paint. Whichever medium you use, you will need to make drawings, and so you need to know how to use basic drawing tools.
Computers are increasingly used in every aspect of graphic design and production.
Graphic media
Graphic media are the techniques used to draw, make or present images. Different media produce images with different qualities, so you need to pick the right media for the type of image you want to create. The main graphic media are listed below.
- Graphite pencils are available in different hardnesses, from 9H (very hard) to 9B (very soft). The softer pencils are useful for applying grey and black tones to drawings.
- Coloured pencils are the easiest way to apply colour to a graphic. They are good for flat areas of colour as well as applying texture to a drawing, and are available in a wide range of colours. Water-soluble coloured pencils can be used to blend colours.
- Felt-tip markers can be water-based or spirit-based. Water-based pens give good results, but can have a streaky finish if not used carefully. Spirit-based pens are better, but need bleedproof paper.
- Watercolours are good for applying a colourwash [colourwash: the application of colour to a drawing, normally done using watercolour paint and intended to give a pale tint to a drawing. ]. Practice is needed for good results.
- Gouache is a good paint for a thick opaque finish, especially on large areas.
- Acrylic paints can be used for opaque areas and to give a colourwash [colourwash: the application of colour to a drawing, normally done using watercolour paint and intended to give a pale tint to a drawing. ]. They work well on most materials including plastics.
- Spray paints are good for painting three-dimensional models, but must be used with care, for example an extraction system may be needed.
- Chalks and pastels are ideal for adding broad areas of colour to drawings and also for toning and shading, but they are not suitable for fine detail.
