The online story of Mary Seacole; activity sheet 1.
The online stories of Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale; activity sheet 2.
Teaching Activities: Introduction: Show children a newspaper. What is a 'newspaper'? What do we mean by 'news'? Who writes the news? Discuss the job of a news reporter. How do they get their information? How do they remember the information?
Activities:
The children are going to be newspaper reporters. They are going to collect news about Mary Seacole, using a 'news chart'. [Activity sheet 1] Stress that the information can be presented through the use of key words, illustrations or a mixture of the two. Children then use the information to write picture and word sentences about Mary Seacole. Children share their report with a partner, before reporting back to the larger group.
Some children could revisit the website and do the same activity for Florence Nightingale. [Activity sheet 2] What do they notice about the two people? What are the similarities? What are the differences?
Plenary: Share outcomes. Talk about the famous people children have looked at so far. Discuss the possibility of using these outcomes as the basis of a class newspaper about famous people.
