The George Stephenson Game

Game 1 (What does not belong game)
After introducing children to George Stephenson, this self-corrective game allows children to explore differences between now and the time of George Stephenson through familiar concepts of clothes [hats] and trains. It also introduces children to the particular context of trains and railways.

It will develop the following skills:

  • Recognise objects associated with a time in the past;
  • Recognise some differences between the past and today;
  • Observe pictures of real objects to find out about the time of George Stephenson;
  • Ask and answer questions when comparing 'now' and 'then' and compare objects used for same purpose - train; hat.
This applies to both html (non-flash) and flash sites.

Game 2 (Train race)
After telling children the story of George Stephenson and the Rainhill Trials, this game reinforces the story and the competitive element of the trials.
Children are asked four questions about the story.
It will develop the following historical skills:
  • Recall some details of the story;
  • Sequence aspects of the event, the Rainhill Trials;
  • Use of language such as 'before' and 'after';
  • Offer reasons why e.g. the Rocket won the trials;
  • Identify some of the effects of the Rocket being named the winner of the trials;
  • Know that a story can be represented in different ways;
  • Use visual and oral sources to find out about George Stephenson;
This applies to the flash site only.
