The Florence Nightingale Game


After introducing children to Florence Nightingale, children explore the learning area to find out some information about her life from pictures and oral sources.
It will develop the following historical skills:
  • Use visual and oral sources to find out about a famous person;
  • Use of language such as 'a long time ago', 'before', 'after';
  • Sequence aspects of the life of Florence Nightingale;
  • Observe pictures of real objects associated with Florence Nightingale.


Game 1 (Quiz)
There are four questions in this self-corrective game. Children are required to identify, from a choice of three, the object which was associated with Florence Nightingale. These objects were seen in the learning area. On completion of all the questions, children see a number of different images of Florence Nightingale and hear a recording of her voice.
The game will develop the following historical skills:
  • Observe pictures of real objects;
  • Use of language such as 'now' and 'then', 'similar' and 'different', 'a long time ago';
  • Recall details about the life of Florence Nightingale;
  • Observe different representations of Florence Nightingale;
  • Describe different representations of Florence Nightingale.
This applies to both html (non-flash) and flash sites.


Game 2 (Jigsaws)
This game develops the following historical skills:
  • Observe pictures before Florence arrived in Scutari and afterwards;
  • Offer reasons for the differences;
  • Identify some of the effects of Florence Nightingale's work in Scutari;
  • Make comparisons across time;
  • Observe pictures associated with hospitals now and in the past;
  • Ask and answer questions about differences between hospital wards then and now.
  • Describe the completed jigsaw pictures.
