Justice Diss High School

We took part in a fashion show to raise awareness of Fair Trade issues. We designed our clothes from recycled materials and modelled them ourselves.

Meryl and Crystal (Year 12) and Hannah, Kerry, Lauren, Robyn, Eleanor, Isobel and Holly (Year 10s) talk about their project.

"Our Year 10 GCSE textiles class at Diss High School got involved with other organisations around the area to do a fashion show to raise awareness and also money for fair trade businesses. Diss High School got involved. We were approached by NEAD (Norfolk Education and Action for Development) who asked us to create outfits made out of recycled materials. We were then to model them at this fashion show.

It went really well. Our outfits got a really good reaction from the crowd and people liked it cause we were young so we brought the student element into the show. And I think that people were quite impressed with how well we managed to do it and hopefully it raised a lot of awareness about fair trade.

It was really good fun doing the fashion show because we all got involved together, so we were all doing it as a group. You got to model clothes which was fun. It was quite good also learning about how people are treated because I wasn't really all that aware until we had the speaker from NEAD come and I think she opened up our eyes to quite a lot of things that are going on in other countries.

It was a lot of different types of dresses and fashions there which went to a wide group of age-groups and I think, it was a fun way to bring most of the people around Diss because it's not the everyday thing you have in Diss, is a fashion show, so quite a lot of people were drawn in by that. It was really interesting for us to do and for people to see us doing it. It also gave people a chance to see some of the clothes you can buy from these fair trade companies. Also a big issue in fair trade is businesses that make clothes today that aren't fair trade and do exploit their employees and so clothes also made an impression on the fact that it's clothes' labels today that need changing.

There were a few guest speakers at the fashion show, some from China and Brazil. One lady read about a day to day diary of somebody who worked for a company and how she was treated, her wages and the conditions that she worked in. There was also another lady who talked about her experience of working in a multinational company factory. As well as the guest speakers there was also entertainment like the choreographers did their own dance and the main speaker, he did a juggling act so that also, the little kids got involved in that if they got bored by the dresses and stuff.”
