  • 28 July - Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia
  • 1 August - Germany declares war on Russia
  • 3 August - Germany declares war on France
  • 4 August - Germany declares war on Belgium
  • 4 August - Britain declares war on Germany after Germany's invasion of neutral Belgium
  • 12 August - Britain declares war on Austria-Hungary


  • 1 August 1914 - Italy declares neutrality


  • 4 August 1914 - Australia enters the war with Britain


  • August - Defence of the Realm Act (DORA) is passed by Parliament


  • 29 October 1914 - Turkey enters the war


  • September or November - First trenches dug on the Western Front


  • Propaganda posters encouraging men to enlist begins to be displayed across Great Britain

Joining up

  • October - Millions of Britons rush to enlist, afraid it will be over by Christmas

Silent night

  • 25th December - Christmas Day truce on the Western Front
