Pocket guide #3: Interviewing

13 March 12 11:52
Jeremy Paxman
  1. Be prepared. Make sure you know your subject before you start your interview.
  2. Use the 5 W's - Who, What, Why, Where and When - of newsgathering. And don't forget How!
  3. Ask open questions - don't let your subject give 'yes' or 'no' answers.
  4. Don't be scared of asking simple questions like 'How do you feel?' It will often get you the answer you want.
  5. Listen to the answers! Don't just plough through your questions - you might miss something interesting.
  6. Avoid clever-sounding jargon or acronyms.
  7. Be persistent, but avoid being aggressive.
  8. Relax and be yourself!
