The North West of England is the destination for the Olympic torch relay today, as it heads along the coast from Kendal to Blackpool and School Report is helping to tell the story of 2012.

HOW SCHOOL REPORTERS CAN GET INVOLVED

  • School Report is producing a daily page on all 70 days of the torch relay, telling the 2012 story from the perspective of young people
  • Send us your updates from the relay route, photos and reports for our daily Olympic torch relay pages
  • Read our page of tips and suggestions for reporting on the relay

Horrible Histories author Terry Deary, who had the honour of carrying the torch himself in Barnard Castle on Wednesday, has been working with School Report to tell some of the more obscure tales of places along the route.

Today it's the turn of much-loved seaside town Blackpool. But away from the Pleasure Beach and the Illuminations, Terry unearths a much more "horrible" tourist attraction of the past!

The torch relay also gives us a great excuse to showcase some of the great 2012-related reporting that has already gone on in schools along the route so read on for some of today's offerings.

"Horrible Histories" of the torch relay: Blackpool

Author Terry Deary sheds light on Blackpool's most unattractive attraction

Blackpool is famous for many things- it's tower, beach and illuminations to name a few!

But back in 1916, the seaside resort has a far less cheerful attraction that captured the imagination of tourists visiting during World War I.

Watch "Horrible Histories" author Terry Deary explain the story in his latest video for School Report!

Olympics in focus

Students from Millfield Science & Performing Arts College used their news day to report the latest stories surrounding the Olympics.

BBC School Reporters Calum and Nathan, spoke of the preparation being done by athletes around the world in anticipation of the games and reported that hotels were taking advantage of the event, by doubling prices.

Going live!

The torch travels through Blackpool today and School Reporters there have already been busy honing their reporting skills.

On News Day in March, Joe and James from Montgomery High School went to the BBC Sport Centre at MediaCityUK in Salford to present a live sports bulletin.

Visit our Reporting 2012 page for more tips on reporting the Torch Relay and the other big events happening this year.
