World War 2 songs: Marlene Dietrich sings 'Lili Marlene' (in German)

Context

Marlene Dietrich (1901 - 1992) was born in Berlin, Germany.

She was a famous singer and film star and, as a prominent anti-Nazi, spent much of the 1930s working in Hollywood, becoming a US citizen in 1939.

During the War years she was a celebrity entertainer of the Allied troops.

The song 'Lili Marlene' is a setting of a poem written by a German soldier in 1915 during World War 1.

It was first recorded in 1939 and became an instant hit. In fact, it was so popular on both sides of the conflict that an English version was speedily penned and recorded - listen to the next clip!
