Marlene Dietrich was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1901.
She was a famous singer and film star and spent much of the 1930s working in Hollywood, becoming a US citizen in 1939.
She was a prominent anti-Nazi and spent the war years as a celebratory entertainer of the Allied troops.
The song 'Lili Marlene' is a setting of a poem written by a German soldier in 1915 during World War 1.
It was first recorded in 1939 and became an instant hit. In fact, it was so popular on both sides of the conflict that an English version was speedily penned and recorded.
