Focus: some typical occupations of the working population in Kochi. Key learning objectives: to identify some key occupations in the city and explore the relationship between the physical geography of the city and the work available; to identify primary and secondary industries in the city region. Summary: Ajay begins his exploration in Mattancherry district where he meets a number of local street traders; he also visits a boatyard on Vypin Island before meeting one of the many groups of workers who make their living from fishing - the operators of the Chinese fishing nets in Fort Cochin. Story: 'Monsoon' (part 1). Shezad and his father Aziz are humble fishermen who earn a modest living fishing in a canoe off the beach at Fort Cochin. It's a simple way of life - but one trip is to prove more eventful than they would wish.
