Story synopsis: Jesus and the fish by Kate Stonham
The story is set after the crucifixion of Jesus. His disciples are fishing on the Sea of Galilee hoping to catch a large haul of fish, but have had no luck. They are also struggling to come to terms with the grief of losing their friend and leader.
Then a voice is heard through the mist, telling them they are fishing on the wrong side of the boat. They throw the nets over the other side and soon they have caught a huge catch of fish.
Peering into the distance the disciples realise it is Jesus himself talking to them. They land the boat and Jesus starts to cook some fish so that they can share a meal together.
As they eat they tell Jesus how difficult they are finding it to carry on his work without him. Jesus tells them that he has taught them about everything they need: Peace, Wisdom and Happiness. They now feel ready to share Jesus's teachings with others.
Story questions:
Why were Jesus's disciples missing him?
What did Jesus say he'd taught his friends that they could tell others about?
Jesus's disciples loved sharing the meal of fish with him. Talk about special times with your friends and family that you've really enjoyed.
Activities:
Food is something we can't do without and it can be something we share with our friends to bring us together. Talk about mealtimes with friends and family which have been extra special or great fun - e.g. at festival times, or birthdays.
Find out more about the Easter story. Before Jesus was arrested he shared a very special meal of bread and wine with his disciples. This meal is remembered by Christians each time they have 'celebrate mass' or 'take communion'. Invite someone in from a church to explain about this special meal.
Set your own 'healthy eating challenge'.
