Pre-programme questions:
Remind each other about the characters in the Bumbleman stories: Bumbleman is a half-bee, half-man, 'half-witted' superhero; Sarah is Bumbleman's long-suffering assistant; Ratfink is his arch enemy who is always devising evil plans; Nauseous is Ratfink's side-kick; the stories are set in the city of Boschester .
In the story Bumbleman is re-evaluating his life and what he wants to do. He thinks there's more to life than being a superhero. Talk about the way people sometimes change their minds about what they want to do or be.
Story synopsis: Bumbleman - Cape and slippers by Alan MacDonald.
Bumbleman has called the city's press together to announce his retirement. He plans to hang up his cape and find a 'new me'. There are lots of things he'd like to do, like learning to play the guitar, knit himself a jumper, and finish the model of a jumbo jet he started years ago.
Ratfink is delighted with the news and decides to put his new 'Weather Warper' into action. It coincides with Bumbleman's first day with a new identity and the fishing trip he is enjoying is ruined by a sudden thunderstorm.
It is not long before Bumbleman realises that Ratfink is up to something, but how will he respond - ignore matters because he's retired and it's nothing to do with him...or as the superhero he is so used to being?
Story questions:
Why had Bumbleman decided to retire from being a superhero?
What are Bumbleman's special talents?
Why did Bumbleman feel he had to do something when he found out about the Weather Warper?
What advice would you give Bumbleman so that he has more time to do things like fishing and finishing off his model plane?
Activities:
Design a poster showing the Weather Warper and advertising the ways it could be used for good instead of evil.
Bumbleman wanted to find a 'new me'. Talk to the adults around school and at home and find out if they've ever wanted to find a 'new me'. Maybe some of them have actually changed the job they do or their lifestyle, like Bumbleman wanted to.
People talk about 'reinventing themselves'. Draw a picture of a new, reinvented you - what will you be like? Would you really want to be that person?
