Programme 3: Who am I, who might I be?
Themes: identity, talents, the future, ambition,
Preparation for the programme:
Focus object: A large mock school report with a few headlines which indicate that the pupil is 'a daydreamer' - e.g. 'must stop dreaming', 'has great ideas but needs to try to concentrate'
Focus image: To display a larger version of the amazing sculpture of Icarus (from inside New Orleans airport) click here:
Programme content:
Story: Oh Henry
Talk about opportunity: Are there things people have noticed about you which might be hidden clues to what you're good at?
Song: All About Our School, 15: 'Altogether as a family'
Reflection: About making the most of what we know we're good at and working hard to improve what we're not so good at, so that we can be proud of ourselves and what we achieve.
Pre-programme questions:
What does the word 'talent' mean?
What sorts of things can people be talented at?
Can anyone name at least one thing they're good at?
Do you think you might get better at different things as you grow up? N.B. It might be a good idea to mention the story of Icarus which is key to the story ending.
Story synopsis: Oh Henry by Sarah Woodall
Henry is a very imaginative boy who can't help himself going off into flights of fancy - he just loves to dream! All sorts of things can trigger his wild ideas - the water coming from the bath taps, the picture on the front of a book...anything! Everyone enjoys Henry's wild ideas but, as his teacher often has to tell him, they are getting in the way of his school work.
So Henry decides to stop dreaming once and for all. But shortly afterwards a presentation about Icarus at school assembly goes badly wrong. As the model wings the class have made for Icarus fall apart, Henry steps in with a completely new story about Icarus, and saves the day!
Henry's ideas turn out to be his best talent and when he grows up he becomes an inventor.
After the programme:
Story questions:
Have your talents ever got you into trouble like Henry's did (e.g. you make people laugh - but at the wrong times)?
Have your friends ever told you you're good at something you didn't know about?
Have you ever thought about what you might be when you grow up - will it necessarily be to do with something you're good at now?
Activities:
Write some sentences about your friends' obvious and hidden talents to go on their school reports. Are their talents to do with school work, or more to do with the kind of person they are?
Talk to your family and teachers about the talents they knew about when they were young and the ones they've discovered as they've grown up. Are there any talents they still wish they had?
Ask them if they have any school reports they can show you. Were their special talents obvious when they were written?
Write a story about hidden talents. How will your character rescue the situation using their special talent and what will they grow up to become?
