Story synopsis: Give and take by Geoff Marshall-Taylor
This is a retelling of one of the stories that was popular within the Wakefield Mystery Play - medieval plays that told and explained stories from the Bible, making them accessible to ordinary people, not just those who could read and write. This story - Give and take - is the shepherds' tale from the Nativity story - except with an extra twist...
Jib, Coll and Daw are shepherds. Late one snowy night, they get a visit from Mak - notorious for stealing anything he can get his hands on, even sheep! All four men lie down to sleep and are soon snoring - Jib louder than them all, which wakens the others and they discover a lamb is missing.
The search for the missing lamb provides the unusual twist in the tale, and as the shepherds finally settle down to sleep again, they are joined by angels who tell them the good news about the birth of Jesus. Daw, Jib and Coll rush to the cave where they find all as the angels had told them...
After the programme:
STORY QUESTIONS:
- What is the twist in this story? Does it come from the Bible story or has it been added in?
- The title of this version of the story is Give and take . Why do you think the writer called it that?
- Why do you think this particular play focuses on the shepherds' part in the Nativity story? (NB use pictures of Wakefield to help)
- The shepherds in the story gave baby Jesus gifts. Why do you think these particular gifts were chosen? What would you have given baby Jesus?
- Why do you think the original plays were called 'Mystery' plays?
ACTIVITIES:
- Listen to the story again. Compare this version of the story with the Bible story (found in Luke 2).
- Use the RSPCA weblink below to find out how to feed birds over the winter. Then make bird feeders that will provide birds at your school with food over the Christmas holidays. If time allows, you could find out about how to feed other wildlife that might visit your school.
- Find out how to become an RSPCA junior member, then draft an advert along the lines of 'Your RSPCA needs YOU!' to encourage others to help out.
- Design a poster to illustrate 'A pet is for life - not just for Christmas'
