Story synopsis: The crying camel, traditional adapted by Sue Reid
Mustapha is a servant of a great, but unkind man, who owns camels. Mustapha loves camels, especially the one that his master rides, which is often mistreated.
It hasn't rained for many months, so there isn't much to eat or drink, and Mustapha's master announces that they are going to travel to Medina to sell the camels so that they can buy supplies.
Mustapha fears that his favourite camel will be the first to be sold, but when they get to Medina the greedy master is too busy feeding himself to worry about his camel. That is, until the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) spots the camel crying in the heat of the day...
After the programme:
STORY QUESTIONS:
- What do we learn about the character of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) from this story?
- What might it teach us about the beliefs of people who follow Muhammad (Muslims)?
- What do you think Mustapha particularly liked about camels?
- Why do you think Mustapha's master was so unkind to his camel?
- What do you think Muhammad actually said to the master?
- Do you think the master continued to mistreat his camel? Why?
ACTIVITIES:
- Write a version of the story of the crying camel as if you are the camel talking.
- Draw up a list of what you would need to care for a pet of your choice - and think about how your daily routine might have to change too. Use other 'experts' (i.e. children in your class who already have this pet) to see if you've forgotten anything!
- Locate Medina on a map - and use the internet or other resources to find out why Medina is an important place.
- Find out about the work of the RSPCA (see weblinks below)
