REFLECTION: on the feelings associated with belonging and helping others to feel as if they belong
Pre-programme questions:
Look at your school logo or badge - what is it and what do the different parts mean? If there isn't an existing meaning, consider why the logo might have been chosen for your school.
Talk about the image of the school - consider whether the building is the school or whether it's the people who go there who are the school.
Think back to when you were new to your school (or maybe you're new this term!) How did it feel? How did you eventually get to belong there? Who really helped you to feel as if you belonged?
Story synopsis: The girl who tried to belong by Kate Stonham
Jess has moved schools and is really feeling as if she's on the outside of things. She does everything she can think of to try to fit in with the children in her new class - except to be herself...
After the programme:
STORY QUESTIONS:
Why do you think Jess felt as if she didn't belong?
Why do you think Jess did each of the things she did to show the children in her class she belonged?
Talk about what Lauren, Harry and Hanif might have thought about her each time.
What might you have done if you were Jess?
What might have happened the playtime after this story ends?
ACTIVITIES:
Does your school have a motto - if it does, what does it mean? If it doesn't, what do you think the motto should be?
If you have a motto, how does it reflect what's important to your school community?
Display the motto somewhere prominent in your classroom and for the rest of the week try to find opportunities to put it into action.
Make a class list of all the different opportunities that there are within your school community for belonging e.g. to a class (e.g. literacy group, lunchtime or after school club, during assembly etc.) Talk about how each contributes to the life of the school.
Write a letter that Jess might have written to her best friend from her old school about her experiences.
