School of Design-Terms and conditions of entry
School of Design (Programme) is organised by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Twofour Broadcast Limited (Twofour), the independent production company commissioned by the BBC to produce the Programme. The information given by persons submitting an entry form (Applicant or you) may be used in the Programme should you be selected.
Applicants will be selected at the sole discretion of the BBC, Twofour and/or their representatives. Applicants agree to take part in the selection process, training and the production of the Programme itself. This will include all production filming editing where required as well as promotion and publicity of the Programme. It will also include participation in any spin off series and content made as a derivative of the Programme.
Applicants agree to abide by the rules, regulations, terms and conditions of the Programme (Rules) which may be varied from time to time by the BBC and/or Twofour.
The selection process period is expected to run from June 20th 2008 to August 31st 2008 and will work in the following way:
- Applications must be received by August 22nd 2008
- A selection panel headed by Philippe Starck will select 25 applicants to move forward to the second stage.
- The 25 people will be invited to attend a selection event in Paris where they will be given a task/tasks, which will be critiqued by Starck. At the event 10 people will be selected to attend the design school in Paris. Twofour will arrange travel to and from the selection event for all 25 invitees.
- The 10 selected applicants attend Starck's design school for up to three months, beginning in September 2008. During their time at the school tasks will be set. Their performance in these tasks, as judged by Starck, will determine whether they are allowed to stay on the course or are asked to leave before the end of the three month period.
- At the end of the process one student will be chosen for a six month work placement with Starck’s agency in Paris.
The decisions of the judges are final. Neither correspondence nor discussion concerning any decision shall be entered into.
Applicants selected for the second stage or subsequent stages of any audition process may be asked to undertake not to accept any engagements in programmes similar to the Programme for any United Kingdom broadcaster other than the BBC prior to broadcast of all episodes of the Programme in the United Kingdom without the BBC’s prior written consent.
EntriesApplicants warrant that they have truthfully and accurately completed the Programme entry form and acknowledge and agree that the BBC and/or Twofour may in its sole discretion disqualify an Applicant from any interview, any part of the selection process or the Programme itself at any time and at any stage if an Applicant supplies or has supplied any untruthful, inaccurate or misleading details and/or information and/or otherwise in breach of any of the Rules.
The online entry form will be available from June 20th 2008 to August 22nd 2008 and entries must be received by 11.59pm on August 22nd 2008. All entries will be considered equally, regardless of when they were received (provided that they are received by the final deadline).
The BBC/ Twofour reserve the right to refuse any entry for any reason at its absolute discretion.
No entries will be returned and shall become the property of the BBC on submission. Each Applicant is advised to retain a copy if appropriate.
Entry to the Programme by Applicants is done at their own risk. Attendance by Applicants at any audition or other event staged by the BBC/ Twofour and travel to and from any such events is at the Applicant's own risk and the BBC/Twofour accepts no responsibility or liability in this regard.
Entries are made at an Applicant's own expense and the BBC/Twofour shall not be liable to reimburse any expenses incurred in making an entry. Entries must not contain defamatory or obscene material.
Unless specifically stated unsuccessful Applicants in any stage will not be contacted by the BBC / Twofour due to the large number of entries anticipated.
The BBC/ Twofour shall not be obliged to make use of any entry and shall not be liable for any loss of publicity or enhancement of reputation.
Content of entriesApplicants must submit only their own original work in the form of drawings with supporting text and agree that this will not infringe the copyright or any other rights of any third party. By submitting design drawings each Applicant grants the BBC and Twofour the right to use or reproduce the drawings or part thereof on the website for the Programme, in the Programme itself and/or any related publicity materials. The right granted by the Applicant is royalty-free, irrevocable and non-exclusive and may be sub-licensed by the BBC and Twofour for the purposes of producing or promoting the website for the Programme and the Programme itself. By submitting the drawings each Applicant grants the above right to the BBC and Twofour for the full duration of any copyright the Applicant has in respect of the drawings. In submitting drawings each Applicant warrants that he/she owns all intellectual property rights in those drawings and that he/she has all rights in those drawings necessary to grant the BBC the right described above.
The Applicant must be the sole author of their entry (except where more specifically provided).
Applicants permit the BBC and Twofour to edit any materials supplied by them in support of their application, in any way it may in its sole discretion consider necessary for the purposes of use in the Programme.
By submitting an entry, Applicants waive in favour of the BBC, Twofour and those authorised by either of them any so-called “moral rights” they may have in relation to an entry and any drawings submitted by the Applicant or any similar rights under laws of any jurisdiction.
In consideration of the BBC and/or Twofour agreeing to assess entries to the Programme, each Applicant by submitting an entry form grants to the BBC and Twofour for themselves and those authorised by either of them an irrevocable exclusive right to use an entry for communication to the public (which includes broadcasting and internet use) and all other rights for the purposes of the Programme.
No publicityEach Applicant warrants and agrees that he/she shall not be entitled to undertake any press, publicity or other discussions with any third party in connection with the application to be a contestant in or appear in the Programme.
Production of the ProgrammeThe production period is expected to be from June 1st 2008 to January 31st 2009. Applicants consent to being filmed and recorded by the BBC and/or Twofour where required for the Programme.
The opportunityPhilippe Starck will provide an opportunity of a lifetime for the successful student to work alongside his organisation for 6 months. The BBC /Twofour will not be responsible for any financial logistical or related issues regarding the opportunity. The Applicant agrees that they are prepared to relocate to Paris for the purposes of the Programme filming and for the following six month period should he/she be successful. Each Applicant agrees to enter into a confidentiality agreement in a form required by Philippe Starck’s organisation. Each student’s subsistence costs will be paid during his/her time in Paris.
The description of the resultant opportunity and selection process in any Programme literature or other medium is not binding and may be varied by the BBC/ Twofour and the BBC/Twofour may make additional opportunities but it shall not be obliged to make any opportunity if it considers it inappropriate to do so.
The BBC/ Twofour reserve the right to seek and issue publicity on behalf of Applicants. Acceptance of these Rules is a condition of entry and receipt of an entry by the BBC/Twofour constitutes each Applicant’s acceptance of and agreement to the Rules.
EligibiltyAll Applicants must be resident in the United Kingdom and must be eligible to work in the United Kingdom and France.
Applications from disabled people are welcomed and encouraged. The BBC and Twofour will endeavour to meet any access needs for such disabled Entrants.
Each Applicant warrants that he/she is 18 years or over, legally entitled to work in the UK & France and will, if required, produce documentary evidence to substantiate the same.
The following persons are not eligible to apply:
-
(i) any person who was employed by Twofour Group Limited or any of its subsidiaries on or after 01.01.2007
(ii) any person who was employed by the BBC or any of its subsidiaries on or after 01.01.2007.
(iii) any member of the immediate family (including any live-in partner) of any person described in (i) and (ii) above.
(v) any person with a criminal conviction which has not been spent in accordance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (other than driving offences which have not resulted in a ban or more serious offences).
