Working with Computers and Monitors

Working with computers and watching monitors may appear to be fairly harmless.  But while working with this equipment does not require much physical activity it is quite stressful for our bodies if it is not arranged well. You can develop aches and pains which can be quite distressing.
 
We all have a legal duty to try and prevent these problems. There are a specific set of regulations called the Display Screen Equipment (DSE) regulations, that sets out things for us to do to help reduce the risk of any problems developing.

  • Carry out a DSE assessment of your work station and make sure it is sent to your manager.
  • Make sure that your posture is good and that you are taking regular breaks.
  • If you have any health problems that you think may be related to your work station please report them promptly.
  • If you have any eye problems or difficulty with your vision make sure you have an eye test.
 
Managers have different responsibilities and actions, in addition to carrying out their own DSE assessment. Managers must:
 
  • Make sure their staff carry out a DSE assessment. You can nominate a co ordinator to carry out this task.
  • Make sure that if any changes are required to the work area they are carried out and documented on the DSE assessment.
  • Keep the records of DSE assessments.
  • Make sure staff take regular breaks and are encouraged to report any health problems.
