Health and Safety Essentials
The BBC is a complex organisation and people working for it have various Health & Safety obligations.
Whilst there are many very specialist roles that require specific H&S competence and training, e.g. Radio Car driver, Engineering Manager, Facilities Manager, there are some core essential thing’s that everyone working for the BBC should understand.
These core essentials are set out in this topic and are structured around the risks people are exposed to and those that they manage.
The requirements set out below apply equally to staff, freelancers and casuals.
The BBC’s core H&S training is being aligned to the pages in this topic and mandatory training is set out on each page, along with some other selected ‘recommended' training.
As noted above there are specialist roles that may require additional training and it is quite possible that your department has some specific local requirements. The requirements set out here do not replace these but should underpin them.
What you need to do
Look at all the pages in this topic and identify those that apply to you.
- More than one page might apply to you, so you might need to know a combination of things
- Satisfy yourself you know what you need to, and have done the training, if not speak to your manager and/or BBC Safety
- Speak to your manager about arranging any training that you need, you might do this as part of your appraisal process if you are a member of staff
- Find out about any additional local requirements
And if you manage others or manage safety
- Look at guidance on this site about
- Make sure the staff and freelancers you manage have the knowledge required. If not organise the required training.
- Remember it’s about the risks people are exposed to or manage on our behalf, not about their employment status.
