Further Editorial Advice

In addition to the interactive modules and further learning recommendations on this site, there is further online editorial advice available to everyone engaged in making programmes / content for the BBC.

Everyone working on a BBC production should be familiar with the BBC Editorial Guidelines, along with some further Editorial Guidance notes.

Following best editorial practice isn't just a job for the production team leader. Sometimes, an issue which is initially small and apparently insignificant can suddenly blow up into a major problem. Being aware of the guidelines before you start and applying them at every stage of production can avoid many difficulties.

The guidelines deal with many production issues - but they are only that: guidelines. All productions are different and no two combinations of factors are ever the same. That's when content producers need to seek further advice.

If you work for an Independent Production Company and you wish to discuss specific editorial issues with the BBC, you should speak in the first instance to the BBC's commissioning executive producer/ commissioner assigned to the project.

Independent Producers for BBC Vision can find further information on changes to the BBC's compliance process via the BBC's Commissioning website. It covers the responsibilities of an independent producer and those of the BBC Executive Producer in the different compliance stages of a programme.
