Frederick William's Story
Lance Corporal Frederick William Chapman, S/8635, 8th Battalion, Que''ns Own Royal West Kent Regiment, killed in action, Flanders, France, 22nd March 1918, age 21. Born Camberwell, Surrey, enlisted New Cross, London. Son of Mrs. Emma Elizabeth Chapman, of Grove St, Evelyn St, Deptford, London. Commemorated at Pozieres Memorial, Panel 58 & 59, Somme, France.
Fred was my Grandad's brother. His body was never found and I have been told that, for many years, his mother would keep a lamp burning in the back window of the house to welcome him home if he returned (because she found it so difficult to accept that he had been killed).
