Keith Williams, Todmorden 2008-11-11

On March 18th Fred was at a training camp in Cleathorpes.
In July 1916 Fred suffered gun shot wounds to the leg and arm
In September 1916 he was in 3rd platoon 2nd Manchester B.E.F He thanks his sister Marie for the 10 shillings postal order.
The Sister in charge of 37 Casualty Clearing Station wrote on 23rd March Fred dangerously wounded in a critical condititon. She states, 'We will try to do everything possible, but there is not much hope he asks me to give you his love.
Fred's final letter home was on 26th March 1917.

Fred Borland enlisted in the Manchester Regiment. He worked at the CWS Manchester as a trainee accountant prior to this.
After initial training he went to France and was wounded in 1916.
When recovered he went back to the trenches.
In March 1917 he suffered gun shot wounds to the abdomen. He wrote to his parents on 26.3.17 stating that he was the only one of four who had been brought to the Casualty Station, the other 3 having been patched up. He was awiting his return to England. As Fred wrote this letter the Sister in charge of the hospital wrote to his parents saying he was critically injured and she didn't think he would survive. He died on 27th March 1917 aged 21.
