Private James Barrow, Scottish Rifles (Killed)

Mr and Mrs John Barrow, 16 Courthill Street, Dalry received word from the War Office on Monday, that their eldest son, Pte James Barrow, who was reported wounded and missing on 27th May last, is now presumed to have been killed on that date. Pte Barrow was in his 22nd year, and joined the colours in January last, being drafted to one of the fronts in April. Previous to enlisting he was in the employment of Messrs Kyle, Aitken and Gardiner as a spinner. He was a quiet and likeable disposition. The sympathy of the community is with his parents in their bereavement.

So after about 10 months the War Office informs the family that their eldest son is not missing died.

He was in the army for only 5 months and in France about two of those before dying at or near Arras. He is remembered in Arras cemetry, Bay 6.

The family did not forget as shown by the annual memorium

BARROW – In loving memory of our dear son and beloved brother, Pte James Barrow, Scottish Rifles, reported missing and presumed killed on 29th May 1917.

He trod the path of duty, Britian’s honour to maintain.

He died for us, our dear one, who will ne’er come home again.

We mourn the absent voice and face

That made home doubly bright,

But memory fills the vacant place

And keeps him ever near.

Inserted by his Father, Mother and Brothers.
