William James's Story

William James Campbell S/15608 6th battallion Gordon Highlanders, was the older of my paternal grandmothers two younger brothers. He was killed in France/Flanders in July 1917. According to family legend, he was wounded in both legs, and being carried down the lines, when he saw his brother in law, Harry Merchant, who was serving in the Cameron Highlanders. Will called out "I've got a Blighty" meaning he was going home to the UK. Then there was a terrific bombardment, and he was not seen alive again, posted missing presumed killed
