Arthur William's Story
On his first day in the war his best friend was blown up next to him.
My uncle Arthur was a very kind and quiet man who did not speak about being in World War I. He worked on a farm at a local estate at Freeford. I think he just wanted to get back to a normal life after the war. I was nearly eight when he died. My family said that on his first day in the war his best friend was blown up next to him. I think he did his training with the North Staffordshire Regiment, but joined the 1st Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters on 17 June 1918.
