William Ernest's Story

I will always remember going into my great-grandfathers flat as a child and seeing a portrait photo on his wall of a young soldier with a medal pinned to the picture, my nan explained that he was her brother and was killed in the war and was one of the unknown warriors as he was never found, which I always thought was very sad. I have a copy of a letter from the British Red Cross to my great-grandmother saying that he was seen to go over the top and was wounded about the legs, but they never recovered his body, and they musn't hold too much hope of her son returning, this letter was dated July 1917.
