My maternal Grandfather, died when I was three years old. He didn't talk about the war much other than having to push the younger soldiers "over the top".
...you'll be shot for refusing to fight...
Many didn't want to go, he had to tell them "if you don't you'll be shot for refusing to fight" it really upset him in later life.
