Charles Joseph's Story
Charles King one of my Great Grandfathers was born in West Row by Mildenhall Suffolk in1859, enlisting in the Suffolk regiment
in 1875. He served with the Regiment until 1904. During his service he went to South Africa during the Boer War and had both the Queens South African Medal and the Kings South African
Medal. On his discharge he went to work as a Horseman on a farm, this meant he had responsibility for all the working horses.
At the outbreak of War he was recalled to the colours and joined the Third Battalion Essex Regiment. Just before his death in 1918 he was transferred to the Labour Corps but he was buried at Colchester Cemetary on2nd April 1918 aged 57 . His only son
John Patrick King may also have been killed.
