My Great Uncle Bill was killed when the HMS Defence was sunk at the Battle of Jutland on the 31st May, 1916. He was 18 years old. He had joined the Navy as a boy recruit at the age of 16 in January 1914 and served on ships named Powerful and Vivid I. On the 29th November 1914 he was transferred to the warship HMS Defence where he attained the rank of Able Seaman in January 1915.
