William's Story

4114 PTE William Cartmell 1/6th Bat (territorials) Devonshire Regiment was my grandfather. Sadly he died 16 July 1916 while serving with the Devonshires in Mesopotamia and is buried in Amarh War Cemetery. My father never knew him as he was less than two years old when William died.

Passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self-sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom.

Let those who come after see to it that his name be not forgotten.

God bless grandfather lest we forget.
