Robert Walter's Story

Unfortunately no memories of my great-grandfather survive. His sons were tiny when he died of influenza in 1919. What we do know is his brothers all died in service of their country before him. Herbert, a career soldier, died in 1914. Ernest, the youngest brother, died in 1915 and Arthur, the only brother not in the Norfolk Regiment (he joined Suffolk's regiment instead) died in 1916.

I cannot imagine what my great-great grandparents felt when they lost their last son. I don't know if any of the other brothers had children or what happened to their families after they died.

I can only be thankful I will never have to live through such terrible times.
