Harold Stanley's Story

My Grandfather joined the 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment in 1914 aged 19years. He fought in France at Ypres and at the battle of the Somme. He was injured and brought back to England to hospital on the Isle of Wight. He was sent back to fight in Mesopotamia where he was hoping to join his brother who was already out there. He arrive two days after his brother has been killed in action. His war medal record shows he received the Victory Medal and the British Star.

My Grandfather never talked about the war, he did not go to any reunions or join any associations belonging to the war. We think he just wanted that chapter of his life closed. He worked as a clerk for a wholesale company before the war and returned to the same firm but went into the carpet warehouse as he could not bear to be shut up in an office. He had one daughter and four grandchildren, he was a lovely caring man who enjoyed life and especially his garden.
