Other memories

John B. Ivel, Selby 2008-11-10

my Grandfather was a quiet man who rarely talked about the war,he was awarded the Military Medal for Gallantry on active service, but he did show me some of his wound scars from bullets and shrapnel. I believe he rescued his brother and an officer who were wounded and brought them back to safety under enemy fire on 31/07/1917, unfortunately his brother (John) was later killed on active service. His MM is at Fort George.

The lower pictures in the goup of four show (left) his brother John Alexander also in the 5th Seaforths and (right) his brother David who was in the Lovat Scouts. My Grand father served as a Lewis Gunner for which he received an extra 6d bringing his pay to 2shillings and 2d(11p)per day. His regimental number was 241353. As a result of heavy casualties the survivors of the 5th, including my Grandfather, were amalgamated into the 6th Seaforths.
