History

Shinto history
Shinto has been a major part of Japanese life and culture throughout the country's history, but for the greater part of that history Shinto has shared its spiritual, cultural, and political roles with Buddhism and Confucianism.
Divinity of the Emperor
The Japanese concept of the divinity of the Emperor is often misunderstood by Westerners. He was not believed to be a supernatural being, but was said to be descended from the kami and inspired by them.
Shinto and nationalism
During the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries Shinto became an established state religion, inextricably linked to the cause of Japanese nationalism.
