Bishops

A bishop is the church leader of a ward.

Holding this post is regarded as an awesome responsibility, as the bishop is responsible for the functions of the ward which help the members on their journey to Christ and eternal life.

There are nearly 18,000 bishops of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (Figure for 2002.)

A bishop is:

• President of the ward's Aaronic Priesthood holders and responsible for their work
• An ordained high priest in the Melchizedek Priesthood
• Presiding high priest in the ward, responsible for ward activities and functions
• Common judge of the ward, able to determine the worthiness of ward members
• In charge of the performance of sacred ordinances
• Responsible for dispensing welfare assistance to the poor and needy

The bishop is assisted by two counsellors, usually themselves high priests.

A bishop is unpaid and expected to earn his living outside the Church. He does not require a degree in theology.

The work of the bishop can take up to 25 hours a week.
