Subdivisions

Sufism
Sufism, or Tasawwuf as it is known in the Muslim world, is Islamic mysticism. Non-Muslims often mistake Sufism as a sect of Islam. Sufism is more accurately described as an aspect or dimension of Islam (one can be a Sunni and a Sufi or a Shia and a Sufi).
Sunni and Shi'a
The words Sunni and Shia appear regularly in stories about the Muslim world but few people know what they really mean. The division between the Sunnis and the Shia is the largest and oldest in the history of Islam.
