In 2007 Joseph Mawle was nominated for the Royal Television Breakthrough on Screen Award for the BBC drama Soundproof. The Times called Soundproof "One of the Drama Highlights of the Year" and The Telegraph said "Soundproof was quality all the way".
2007 also saw two performances from Joseph under the direction of Adrian Shergold, the first in Jane Austen's Persuasion for ITV 1 and the second in Clapham Junction for Channel 4. Time Out said of Joseph's performance in the drama "the actors, Joseph Mawle and Luke Treadway, put in BAFTA winning efforts."
Mawle was born in Oxford on 21 March 1974. At 16 his hearing was damaged by a viral infection. He now wears aids in both ears. He describes his hearing without aids as "muddy and distant with no sense of direction".
Mawle's acting career began when he won a scholarship to The Bristol Old Vic. He graduated in 2002. His theatre credits include Troilus, in the critically acclaimed production of Troilus and Cressida at the Tobacco Factory in 2003, Patrick Sandford's Hamlet for the Nuffield Theatre, Southampton, and finally Braham Murray's Antony and Cleopatra for Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre.
Joseph's first television role was playing 'Sir Tificate' in the series Sir Gadabout, The Worst Knight in The Land for CITV which won the BAFTA for Best Children's Drama in 2003. He then went on to star in Alex Holmes's three part mini-series Dunkirk (BBC2), which won a BAFTA in 2005 and also the Huw Weldon Award for Specialist Factual Drama.
At the beginning of 2008 Mawle was seen in Foyle's War playing POW Fred Dawson. His next feature film is Lecture 21 and his next theatre project is playing Judas Iscariot in The Last Days of Judas Iscariot at the Almieda.
