If possible, try to leave when your partner is not around.
Even though you're only leaving temporarily, it is still best to take important documents with you such as bank and benefit books and your passport. See the Crisis plan for details.
If you're going to stay with friends or family for a short break, think about whether you should warn them about your partner's behaviour.
If you decide to go to a refuge, you must keep the address and contact details totally confidential.
If you have children with your partner you may need to sort out issues such as who the children will live with, and if, and how they have contact with their parent in a safe way. For more information see Your children and your legal rights .
