Steve and Alex Jones talk about Let's Dance for Comic Relief
Let's Dance for Comic Relief is set to return on 19th February for four fun-filled weeks and no-one is more pleased about this news than Alex Jones, who is set to take over the role of co-presenter with returning host Steve Jones.
"It's absolutely brilliant, it's going to be really nice to be back on screen with Steve after almost a decade," she says of the duo's stint on The Pop Factory.
"We both came from the same place and now we're on a Saturday night prime time show together. Hopefully the great relationship between us will transfer to the screen, and the audience will enjoy it all the more for it!"
The pair have both come a long way, and are happy to sit and reminisce about their earlier presenting work. "Steve had an American accent," laughs Alex. "Maybe more of a twang," agrees Steve, "But it was still a great period working together!"
Both presenters have very good reasons why they want to be part of the show, as they have experienced first hand the difference Comic Relief can make to peoples lives. Steve is passionate about the charity after seeing the work being done in Uganda.
"Everyone wins, the public are being entertained, money's being raised and people are living and surviving on the other side of the planet," he says. "Anything that can inspire you to go out, do good and just be selfless - even for one day of the year - is just wonderful."
For Alex, visiting Zambia and becoming involved in Comic Relief has made her more determined for the show to succeed in raising both money and awareness. "I think from being out there, you can hit the message home a little harder when you’re on the show," she says.
This year’s Let's Dance sees stars like Noel Fielding, Lulu and Katie Price amongst the stellar line up. "Noel Fielding is a legend," gushes Steve, clearly excited about the host of stars set to appear. "These are iconic British people. It's very exciting!"
However, as Steve notes, a great line-up brings greater competition, with stars beginning their training earlier than ever before. "Everyone wants to come in and start immediately, so the competition is going to be sky high," he says. "They all want to win because it's a much coveted slot - ask Rufus Hound, whose life has changed significantly since last year."
Alex adds that the pair had both been approached by stars who wanted to participate. "I think that shows really how quickly the show has become established. For people to be approaching the team, I think that’s a really good sign of how strong the show is," she says.
However, the pair are reluctant to take to the dancefloor themselves. "We’re not the best... Steve won’t dance. It's not really a case of 'can't', just 'won't'. He refuses point blank!" says Alex.
If the pair had to choose a number to emulate, their vote would go to Steve's favourite film routine - Pulp Fiction, following in the footsteps of former contestants Suggs and Zoe Ball. "It's not that difficult is it? Just move your hands a bit and wiggle your leg!" he says.
Clearly the pair are far more suited to introducing the dancing than getting involved: "It's not fair on the viewer, and I’m sure these people will do an amazing job, we’ll just hold it together!" Alex laughs.
