Analogue TV – Nicam stereo sound

Nicam is a system developed by the BBC that provides digital stereo sound for analogue TV. It means the sound is sharp and clear, and you can hear the full stereo effects.

All the BBC transmitters broadcast Nicam stereo sound. You should be able to receive it if you have good TV reception, although you may need to adjust your aerial.

To hear it, you need a TV set or a stereo video recorder with a built-in Nicam decoder. You may also need a stereo amplifier and two loudspeakers if these are not built into your TV set. Consult your TV or video recorder manual for details of how to turn on the Nicam stereo facility.
