Analogue TV – Interference

Interference happens when a TV signal is distorted by other signals or objects before it reaches your TV aerial. It can be caused by electrical equipment, radio communications or the weather.

If you have a poor quality TV picture like one of the images below, please click on the relevant link for more information. Otherwise, see the main Picture and sound problems page.

Electrical interference

Patterns, dots, flashes, loss of colour, buzzing, clicks: see Electrical interference

Radio interference

Wavy or herringbone pattern: see Radio interference

Co-channel interference

Smooth, evenly spaced horizontal bars - a 'Venetian blind' effect: see The effects of weather

Further help

If you cannot trace the source of interference, you can report it to the BBC and we will help you to investigate. If the interference is caused by something outside your control, we will liaise with the appropriate body to notify them of the issue. Please see our reception problems tool for further help and information.
