BBC R&D

Audio Research work stream

The Audio team in BBC R&D works on personalised and immersive listening experiences for our audiences, and on the new technology needed to provide those experiences. We work with other departments throughout the BBC, with academic partners on novel research, and with industry partners to develop standards and evaluate new tools and systems.

We divide our work into four main areas:

  • Personalised and accessible audio - services that adapt to the needs and preferences of our listeners

  • Immersive audio - applying spatial audio technology to broadcast content and new interactive experiences such as VR/AR

  • Intelligent production tools - developing advanced tools for our content creators to enable new and improved services

  • Operational support - providing expert advice to the BBC on audio systems, including subjective quality evaluation
