Abstract
This
paper describes the requirements of a programme metadata
capture system for use by broadcasters in the digital
age and presents solutions for implementing some
of those requirements. The requirements fall into
two categories, system requirements and user requirements.
System requirements include expandability, data flexibility,
fault tolerance, scalability and upgradeability.
User requirements include access control, simultaneous
visibility of data changes (referred to as active
refresh), and distributed working. The proposed solutions
include use of a component standard such as CORBA,
with asynchronous communications and loose coupling
of components; data self-description in terms of
semantic types, format types and structure; and a
novel hierarchical schedule representation based
on schedule instructions.
