Abstract
In
Europe, the vast sums of money raised in some countries
by the recent auctions of spectrum for third generation
(3G) mobile telephony have forced broadcasters to
think carefully about their aims for digital television
and the amount of spectrum satisfying these will
require. In addition, the prospect of a full regional
re-planning conference in 2004/5 is intensifying
debate about the spectrum requirements for DVB-T
systems. The DigiTAG Task Group on the Commercial
Aspects of Spectrum Demand have done much work on
identifying the service requirements for DVB-T systems
in the all-digital future, including conducting a
questionnaire amongst a wide-range of industry groups
and countries. This paper discusses the prospect
of renewed spectrum scarcity, the principal elements
of service requirements and presents some highlights
from the questionnaire.
