Welcome to the BBC's TPEG webpages
Here you will find information about TPEG. Please note the BBC's free software library for TPEG is no longer available.

In order to demonstrate and experiment with the TPEG (Transport Protocol Experts Group) protocol family, the BBC has developed a software library developed to simplify the encoding, manipulation and decoding of TPEG services. In the interests of stimulating the development of both services and receivers, this software library is being made available free of charge to anyone wanting to experiment with the features that TPEG and DAB Digital Radio can offer.

The Library

The current version of the library is 2.0

For development purposes, live UK traffic information data is available in a binary file of TPEG data to be found at www.bbc.co.uk/travelnews/tpeg/incoming.tpg

The library conforms to the following TPEG specifications:

BPN 027-2 TPEG Part 2 -
Syntax, Semantics and Framing Structure, TPEG-SSF_3.0/001

BPN 027-3 TPEG Part 3 -
Service and Network Information, TPEG-SNI_3.0/001

BPN 027-4 TPEG Part 4 -
Road Traffic Message Application, TPEG-RTM_3.0/001

BPN 027-6 TPEG Part 6 -
Location Referencing for Applications, TPEG-LOC_3.0/001

The current specifications for TPEG may be obtained from the EBU.

Because of the way the TPEG protocol is structured, it naturally lends itself to manipulation with an Object Oriented language. For this reason the TPEG software library has been written as a set of C++ classes. The C++ class library has a fully documented API (Application Programming Interface) that can be used by those wishing to write their own TPEG applications, but it also comes with example software for encoding and decoding TPEG services.

Please note the BBC's free software library for TPEG is no longer available.

The specifications for DAB may be obtained directly from ETSI - please see the WorldDAB web site for details.
